How To Stop Amazon From Sharing Your Phone Number With Outside Sellers

* * * Amazon’s current, limited-time sale on the Kindle (normally $79, currently $59), Kindle Paperwhite (normally $99, currently $79), Fire HD7 (normally $139, currently $99) and Fire HD Kids’ Edition (normally $149, currently $124). Advertisers make it possible for Digital Media Mom to bring you great content each day for free, so thanks for your support. * * * How Did You Get This Number? I recently bought some Visage Instant Lift wrinkle serum on Amazon, and it was one of those “fulfilled by Amazon” deals where the seller is an outside company but Amazon handles the order processing. I’ve been very happy with the serum (and despite the incident that follows will most likely order it again), but about a week after it arrived I started getting calls from the seller at home, on the same phone number I have listed with Amazon. I wrote the first call off as random telemarketing, but noticed a reference to my…

It used to be that when you bought a laptop you knew exactly what you were getting: essentially, a portable version of a desktop computer. Then Netbooks came along late in the 90’s: machines that looked like laptops, but were typically smaller and had very little memory or ability to run programs because they were primarily built for web surfing, email and little else. The Netbook never really took off and eventually faded away. But more recently, Netbooks are back — they’re just not being called Netbooks anymore, for the most part.

Venmo has been generating buzz and gaining in popularity ever since it launched, but the convenience of being able to use the Venmo mobile app to instantly transfer funds to pretty much anyone with an email address or phone number may not be worth the risks. Last July the California Department of Business Oversight ordered Venmo to address twenty different security and operational problems. Here are the top five that are of most concern to consumers. 1….

Facebook stickers are little, ready-made icons you can insert in your private messages and in comments you make to others’ status updates and posts when you’re using the full Facebook site in a web browser—functionality will vary in the mobile app and mobile version of Facebook. There are lots of sets, many of them featuring licensed characters like Snoopy, Om-Nom from Cut the Rope, Adventure Time and World of Gumball, and they’re FREE! **UPDATE** It appears that stickers are not enabled on Fan Pages, only on individual Facebook users’ timelines/profiles and in private messages.

I love using ALL the various functions of my Kindle Fire HDX, and one of them is listening to music. But I’ve noticed this maddening tendency for my Fire NOT to update automatically when I’ve bought new music: I buy some MP3s and they’re added to my Cloud library, I can see them and listen to them on my computer in Amazon’s Cloud Player, but even after repeatedly syncing my Fire tablet (Options menu > Sync All Content), that new song or album refuses to show up in the…

Advertisers and product manufacturers know that a positive Amazon review can carry a lot of weight with consumers, and that’s why some unscrupulous types have actually started paying for positive Amazon reviews. Whether on Craigslist, online job boards, or maybe even right in your own email inbox, it’s not hard to find solicitations for people who are willing to write fake, 5-star product reviews. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to spot fake reviews. I’ve seen some online articles that explain how to look for clues in the body of the review itself, by analyzing…

How To Boost WiFi Signals

I recently wrote about How To Boost Cell Signals, and today I’m tackling Wi-Fi. If you’ve been experiencing problems with weak Wi-Fi in your home, there are a few likely causes that are easy, and in some cases free, to remedy. Here are some things to try. 1. Check your wireless router’s location. When your service provider installed your Wi-Fi router, you may not have realized that its placement can affect signal strength and range. Ideally, your router should be located at the very center of your home in order to provide maximum signal range in all directions outward from the router. However, in practice it may turn out that most of the time you’re only actually using your Wi-Fi connection in one area of your home. To get a concrete idea of where signals are strongest and weakest in your home, you can simply take one of your Wi-Fi enabled devices and…

How To Choose A Printer

Last week’s Tech Frustration Friday meme was inspired by the death of my Canon PIXMA MX850 multifunction printer. I followed my usual process for deciding whether or not it was worth trying to fix what was wrong with the printer, then choosing a replacement, and thought I should share that process here. Here’s the new model I ultimately chose: Epson WorkForce WF-2530 Wireless All-in-One Color Inkjet Printer, Copier, Scanner, ADF, Fax. Fix It, Or Buy A New One? I’d had the Canon machine for close to four years, so I can’t say it came as a total shock when it suddenly refused to perform any of its multifunctions (print, copy, scan, fax) and displayed an error code of “B200″ on its screen. A little Googling showed me that the code means there’s a printer head problem. A little more Googling, and watching some YouTube videos, showed me that if this problem were “fixable”…
