Samsung has already agreed to not only recall all existing Note 7 smartphones, when the replacements proved just as prone to explode they went a step further and cancelled the new product line altogether. Now the FAA has issued an historic ban on the devices.

Note 7 At The Airport

From the DOT.gov site:

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), today announced it is issuing an emergency order to ban all Samsung Galaxy Note7 smartphone devices from air transportation in the United States. Individuals who own or possess a Samsung Galaxy Note7 device may not transport the device on their person, in carry-on baggage, or in checked baggage on flights to, from, or within the United States. This prohibition includes all Samsung Galaxy Note7 devices. The phones also cannot be shipped as air cargo. The ban will be effective on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at noon ET.

For their part, Samsung has expanded the Note 7 recall program so all owners of original Note 7 devices or the replacement Note 7 can return them for a refund or to exchange for a different Samsung smart phone. From Samsung’s 10/13/16 announcement:

Samsung has announced an expanded voluntary recall on all original and replacement Galaxy Note7 devices sold or exchanged in the United States in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and in partnership with carriers and retailers. Since the affected devices can overheat and pose a safety risk, we are asking consumers with a Galaxy Note7 to power it down and contact the carrier or retail outlet where they purchased their device.

Consumers who have a Galaxy Note7 device can now exchange their phone for another Samsung smartphone, or receive a refund, under the terms of the expanded U.S. Note7 Refund and Exchange Program.
