Windows Users: Uninstall QuickTime NOW
Just a quick, but VERY IMPORTANT advisory today.
Word came from Apple late last week that a potentially catastrophic security hole has been found in the Windows version of their QuickTime video player software/web browser plugin, and APPLE HAS NO PLANS TO RELEASE A PATCH. Apple and Microsoft are BOTH warning Windows users to uninstall QuickTime IMMEDIATELY. From Time.com:
Do you still have QuickTime for Windows on your PC? Get rid of it, pronto. That’s the advice coming from the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT), following an “urgent call to action” by cybersecurity firm Trend Micro. The version of QuickTime on Apple computers is not affected.
What’s the rush? Trend Micro found two critical flaws in the PC version of Apple’s media-playing software that could let hackers take over victims’ computers.
How To Uninstall
Go to Control Panel > Uninstall a program, then wait for the list of installed software to populate. If you see QuickTime listed there, click to select it then click the Uninstall link at the top of the Uninstall dialog box.
Note that the installed software list is alphabetical, but you should check both for an entry called “QuickTime” and any entries that begin with the word “Apple” and include the name “QuickTime” in the full title.
Don’t take any chances: check for QuickTime on your Windows machine and if you find it, uninstall it TODAY.
