Fire and Kindle Software Updates: Information and Downloads

Send to Kindle

Last week Amazon started rolling out the new Fire OS 4.5.5 operating system update to compatible Fire tablets, and this has got a lot of Fire device owners wondering first, how to tell if their Amazon device is running the most recent software and second, if not, how to get updates.

Amazon’s Fire & Kindle Software Updates page is the place to go.

On that page, all Amazon Fire and Kindle devices are listed. That includes everything from monochrome Kindle ereaders to Fire TV devices. Find the device you want to check and click on it to view its specific Software Updates page.

On that page, you will find the name/number of the most recent software version for your device, along with instructions (or a link to instructions) for how to determine your device’s current software version.

Amazon Devices Are Supposed To Update Automatically
Note that all Amazon devices with WiFi connectivity are designed to update automatically anytime the device is connected to WiFi and a new software version is released.

However, updates are typically rolled out to groups of device owners in blocks instead of to all owners simultaneously, so you may not get a given update on the day it is released.

It’s also possible that a given update will fail on your device for some reason, and that’s another time when you’ll want to visit the Software Updates page for your device.

And now…

When you’re ready to stop buying cheap-o, falls-apart-in-a-month reading glasses and get a set of sturdy, attractive, high-quality readers that are built to last and to look good, the Fiore® 4 Pack of Designer Reading Glasses w/ Spring Hinges & Matching Cases is a great way to go. One set is shown below, but they’re available in a variety of patterns, colors and frame shapes. The four-pack is currently priced at $31.95 (as of 8/6/15), which is a 60% discount off the regular price of $80. I bought a set over a year ago and have been very happy with them. My Kindle says I have 10.5.1_user_5173420. The update listed for my devide is 10.5.1_user_5172420. Do I update or not?

The software version number is the part before “_user”, and in this case the version numbers match so you’re all up to date!
